The Fireplace Flatscreen Debate, Part One

The Mantel or the Flatscreen, That is the Question

Here at the Fireplace Decorating blogspot we’re of a mixed mind when it comes to what belongs above a fireplace. On the one hand, we’re kind of traditionalists. We like the classic look of a quality mantel with a few family pictures on it or a framed painting that reflects the room’s overall aesthetic. At the same time, we are also drawn to new technologies, which is why the jury is still out around here when it comes to hanging a flatscreen TV above the hearth. In the right room, it could look fantastic. In the wrong room, it could be like watching the Super Bowl at Versailles—that is, kind of cool until you realize the brand new Samsung makes the fold leaf look tacky.

Whatever you decide, though, it is worth considering a few things besides just how the set will look. There are some safety issues to think about, particularly regarding temperature. That’s why I’m posting this short consumer advice piece from the New York Times about exactly that subject. Have a look. And if you’ve got any ideas of your own, feel free to send them along.
