Our Brick Eyesore No Longer An Ugly Duckling

"This is the most amazing product I have ever used. As you can see from our before picture, our fireplace had a disgusting stain around our new wood stove. When we bought our house it was such an eye sore. I tried cleaning with many products and none worked. We looked into re tiling the fireplace and it would have cost us thousands of dollars. As you can see from the after picture, the fireplace now looks amazing. I can hardly believe it is the same fireplace It went from an ugly duckling to a swan!!!It did take us 2 days. We put on the base coat the first day and the other coats on the next day. The directions including the DVD helped so much. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of changing the appearance of their fireplace."

Made the old brick hearth shine! WOW

Today I helped my friend Dioni update a brick fireplace. We were both ready to tackle the job after we found that the masonry fireplace paint we wanted came in this gorgeous twilight taupe. As you can see it turned out beautifully, and Dioni was so amazed to see that it looked like real brick and not a painted over mess. Her husband said he thought that someone came in and rebricked the old hearth. Little did he know (at least until we told him) that we did it all by ourselves. I am a veteran of using this product but Dioni was skeptical but she wanted to do something to help lighten her living room and she was tired of the drab look of the old red brick fireplace. So what do you think? Did we do a good job? Do you like the amazing difference? WE DO!

Reface A Fireplace In One Afternoon

This project turned out simply beautiful! We tackled it in one afternoon. The step by step instructions were easy to understand, the product arrived super fast and the customer service rep was simply awesome. I thought you may like to see some photos of our fireplace (pictured above) it was a ugly faded red before we had painted it with your product. We are amazed with the results of the outcome, it totally gave the fireplace life and also brightened up the living room. (pictured below)

After we painted the fireplace we then had it converted from a wood burning fireplace to a gas fireplace. Thanks Sharon! I am so glad you loved it and I so appreciate you taking the time to email me the pictures.

This brick fireplace resurfacing endeavor I decided to take on was incredibly easy! Even though I had researched all about this product, and looked through every one of the pictures... I was still nervous to start the painting process. The whole process went smoothly.. and I am overly satisfied with the results! Let me know what you think.

Top 10 Things to Clean in the Spring

After a winter spent primarily indoors, the urge to clean when the earth begins to warm is common. These ten things should be on your list.

Bed covers
Sheets get washed, furniture gets dusted, but how often does your comforter or bedspread get cleaned? Dust, skin cells and animal dander collect on bed covers over time. For simplicity’s sake, take it to the cleaners and let them wash it while you tackle the rest of the home.

Windows plus
Washing windows is often on the least desirable chore list. Sometimes that’s because they are difficult to reach; other times cleaners leave streaks that cause you to re-clean inside and outside trying to identify the specific location of the streak. In addition to the glass of the windows, clean the window sills and any window treatments. Launder curtains or valances for the same reasons mentioned for washing comforters.

Ridges
Furniture surfaces like tables and bookshelves get dusted fairly regularly throughout the year. Baseboards, doorframes and ceiling fan blades, on the other hand can gather a year’s worth of dust before getting attention. Spring cleaning is as good a time as any to clean those ridged surfaces.

Closets
If you are like most American families, your closets are full of clothes you never wear. To make room for the new items you received over the holidays, clean out your closets. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the past year. Give those clothes away as hand-me-downs or donate them to a local charity. If you’re feeling extra energetic, perform the same process for cupboards and cabinets throughout the home, disposing of expired items and donating excess items.

Kitchen appliances
While you are in cleaning mode, you might as well tackle the oven and the refrigerator. These appliances are easy to neglect because they are so commonly used. Take the time to clean out last year’s crumbs, spills and residues to start fresh this spring.

Carpets/rugs
To thoroughly clean the floors in your home will require furniture to be moved. Vacuum or mop under the sofa, chairs and beds in your home to prevent dust bunnies and insect carcasses from forming an army. Shampoo the carpets and rugs while you’re at it.

AC filter
Replacing the filter in your heater and air conditioner keeps the air ducts cleaner and makes your units run more efficiently.

Fireplace
Have a chimney sweep clean your chimney before you clean out your fireplace. Clean should always happen from the top first to prevent double cleaning. Keeping chimneys clean prevents fires and bird nests. Consider updating your fireplace with a new fireplace glass door or economy mantel.

Gutters
It was too cold over the winter to do it, but now that spring rains are just around the corner you want your gutters to perform at their best. Clean out leaves and muck that has gathered over the colder months to keep gutters from getting clogged.

Lint trap
Even if you clean the lint trap after every load of clothes dries, it is important to keep the space beyond the lint trap clean as well. This, too, prevents potential fires as well as helping your dryer to last longer and run more efficiently.

If this all seems overwhelming, check into cleaning services. Austin to Boston, there is bound to be one in your area.

Home Stagers and Interior Decorators Will Love This Redo!

Just thought you might be interested in the pictures.  I think it turned out great and much better than just coating the fireplace with just paint. We used the twilight taupe brick paint color theme, it is a sandstone, tumbled marble look with taupe, beige and cream.

Interior designers and home stagers could really use this product in fixing up their staged homes. The two ladies I showed it too really liked the way the fireplace turned out as well and is taking photos to share with their clients.

Nervous Transformation

Here it is, our masterpiece. I say ours, but it's my friend Amber's home. I will let her tell you the rest.

"My father-in-law is a mason and created this wall and fireplace 40 years ago.  We were very hesitant to change something so drastic that he worked on , and did a fantastic job.  As you can see, it is not a small area, it is one whole wall in the downstairs family room."

"We are very pleased with the results and the overall change we have made to our home. We get so many compliments on the way the brick still looks like brick and not the “flat” painted look!  Tanya, thank you so much for helping me with this."

So, what do you think? Did we do a good job?
Yes, it did take us a long time. Amber chose Twilight Taupe color themed paint from the brick paint kit selection. The paint is guaranteed to make sure your brick retains it's natural masonry look unlike just slapping paint on it.

Operation Fantastic: Den Dramatic

This is my neighbor's fireplace. She has been trying to decide for the last six months what she wanted to do with her awkward fireplace. She wanted to keep her den the same color-wise and she knew she couldn't refurnish the entire room so I pulled out all the Fireplace Makeover's that I have helped transform. It took a while for us to convince her husband but we made a go of it anyway.

As you can see the fireplace brick was covered in soot from the previous years of fireplace use and the brick left a lot to be desired. So, she chose a color (Twilight Taupe) and we decided to try one small brick. We followed the whole procedure, step by step as the kit said and it looked awesome. When we showed her husband he was finally excited and said go for it, so we did. Here are the amazing results.

Since this photo was taken she has since changed her carpet color to a chocolate brown and added new furniture and I am still trying to get her to let me take a picture!!!

A Very Special Birthday Mantel

by Emily at 52 Mantels Our featured blogger this week.

My sweet baby girl had a fun party on Saturday! She officially turns one on Tuesday (sniff, sniff) but Saturday she celebrated herself silly.
We're talking cake on her face, skipping some naps, playing hard as she can, silly.

And, then she slept. For 14 glorious hours. And, I slept too.

A little birdie told me you'd like to see our "tweet" party mantel. Why don't you fly on over to our nest and...
Yes, I can go on and on like that (really. I can.), but, I'll spare you my word play and get to the details.

Like I mentioned on Friday when I gave a tutorial for our inexpensive invitations, the party was done in a bird theme. Hence, the large bird. And, small birds. And, birds' nests. And, birdcage. And, bird accents. And, bird picture frame. And, bird scrapbook paper.
Yes, we stuck to our theme

Firebox Paint

A Fireplace with no firebox paint can look barren.

With the economy in the shape its in, we are always looking for ways to improve your fireplace, while saving money as well. A great quick fix could be to just paint the inside of your fireplace with a black firebox paint. This immediately transforms the interior of your fireplace from an old ashen look to a fresh clean black.
Any paint used to paint a firebox must meet strict safety and environmental standards. Regular fireplace paint doesn’t quite cut it when you’re talking about temperatures as high as 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Intense temperatures call for a specially designed firebox paint that won’t crack, peel or, worse, emit harmful chemicals into the living area.

Interior fireplace paint should always meet the following criteria:

• Withstand temperatures up to 1200 degrees
• Contain a silicone protectant
• Rust-resistant
• Won’t scratch

Amongst other changes, this fireplace now looks
great with its new coat of firebox paint.

Firebox paint is not expensive, and is as easy to apply as any other paint. You may have to put a little more prep time into getting the firebox cleaned, but the end results of using the right interior fireplace paint greatly outweigh the efforts.
