Awestruck With My Brick Fireplace Painting Results

Here are photographs that you may use if you like. It really has made such a difference in our small living room. I had the Regency Stove we purchased painted Surf-Sand color to match the Twilight Taupe colorway. Even the guys putting in the new stove were awestruck that I did the painting myself. They put stoves in day in and day out and were really impressed. Thanks again for all the help. I am so proud of our "new" living room!

Afraid to Paint your Brick Fireplace?

This was an easier project then I thought. This product is amazing! I can't believe I didn't do this sooner! These are the most recent comments and letters that I have received after months of showing off my how to paint brick and keep it looking like brick. Brick Paint is not to be feared, just look at the amazing results. They are all over my blog. Not only have I personally helped with doing a lot of these fireplaces but I have also posted a photo of my own fireplace. You may be intimidated to get started but there is truly nothing to worry about. The brick paint kits that I have used repeatedly for many months now come with an easy to follow DVD and all the supplies you need to get your old brick fireplace modernized and warming your comfort room this season.

Here is Peg's letter to me last week:
"We’re so happy with these results. This is a remarkable product! I was nervous to start this project, but once I started it was so fast and easy. Everyone thinks this is the natural color of the brick. I’ve wanted to do something to this fireplace for years and was about to give in and just paint it when I found your website. Thank you for a great product!" - Peg

How to Paint A Room Perfectly

One of the worst feelings is that of realizing that you have roller marks in your new paint job. Although this is a fairly common occurrence, there are some techniques you can use to keep your painted walls smooth and mark free.

  • Get ready – Move all furniture out of the way. Cover furniture and floors with drop cloths to protect from drips and spills. Use painter’s tape to cover trim and other things you don’t want painted. Do not use masking tape since it can cause damage to walls and other surfaces, causing you more work.

  • Do edging – Paint corners and edges with a paintbrush. Load enough paint into your brush to cover without dripping. Paint in 1-2 foot sections, skipping ahead so you are painting from a dry area to wet paint each time. When edging and doing corners, paint an area that is around 3-4 inches wide so you don’t have to scrape and mark walls by getting your roller into tight places.

  • Roller paint large areas – After you have completed your edging, load your paint roller for the large areas. Fill your roller, completely covering the surface. Remove excess paint with the ridges at the top of the pan. If the roller is producing drips, it is overloaded. In order to avoid leaving roller marks, paint in a zigzagging pattern, covering only 3-4 sq. ft. of wall at one time. Starting at the top of the section, paint a capital M shape on the wall. Next, zigzag over that area until it is completely filled in. Work in sections, starting at the top and always painting from a dry area toward a wet area. Once you have painted 4 sections, roll over the completed sections to blend the paint before moving on.

  • Paint trim – Follow the same edging directions as for walls. Then paint areas of 12-18 inches long from dry to wet areas. It is extremely important not to overload brushes, as drips will ruin your freshly painted walls. Paint slowly and methodically to ensure that your trim is as flawless as your walls so your entire room will look professionally done.

Nothing ruins the look of a room as quickly as streaks, roller marks, or drips in your paint’s finish. To avoid these blemishes and to get professional results, make sure you avoid overloading your rollers and brushes. You must also work in zigzagging patterns from dry areas to wet areas that have already been painted. Although this can seem much more awkward than rolling paint up and down on walls, it provides a much nicer finish. In addition, it will eventually become habit as you get used to painting the correct way. If you are planning on painting in your home, make sure you have a sufficient amount of time to complete the job before starting. An average room takes around 4 hours to paint properly, while the trim adds around 3 extra hours to the total time for the job.

The Difference Is Dynamic and I Did It Myself!

Here are my pictures as I promised.  I Thought I had a before that showed the whole fireplace, but I couldn't find it.  As I said in an earlier email WOW!!!! The results are better than we expected.  Great product and DVD/video instructions.

As you know, our fireplace was so dark and made the room look smaller. When I saw you had recommended the Brick Anew Brick Paint Kit I never would have thought that the difference would be so dynamic. It has brightened up the whole room, and makes it look bigger.  We had planned to cover the fireplace brick with sheet rock and tile.  I thought this might be a temporary fix,  but I love it so much I wouldn't think of covering it now.  You saved us a lot of money, not to mention time as it only took us about six hours to complete.  I would highly recommend this fireplace remodel to anyone before taking any drastic measures to replace, cover or destroy their brick fireplace. Thanks again.

Home Stagers and Interior Decorators Will Love This Redo!

Just thought you might be interested in the pictures.  I think it turned out great and much better than just coating the fireplace with just paint. We used the twilight taupe brick paint color theme, it is a sandstone, tumbled marble look with taupe, beige and cream.

Interior designers and home stagers could really use this product in fixing up their staged homes. The two ladies I showed it too really liked the way the fireplace turned out as well and is taking photos to share with their clients.

Beautiful and Affordable DIY Fireplace Designs

When it comes to home renovation, you can save a considerable amount of money by taking care of upgrades yourself. If you have the handy skills and the patience for this type of project then there is no limit to the possibilities. There is a seemingly endless supply of Do It Yourself resources out there for adventurous homeowners, like you, that supply great ideas and tips on just about any home improvement project. You can find fantastic inspiration in books at the bookstore or online. Online, there are hundreds of interior design and DIY blogs and sites that offer up a wealth of knowledge. Remember that there is no limit to your imagination; so have fun and get creative. Here are a select few ideas for that fireplace that you keep staring at, but just can’t seem to figure out.

Painting

One great and easy way to take your old fireplace and give it a quick and easy update is to paint the existing bricks. You can choose a color that fits the rest of your home décor or matches the mood you are trying to create in your room. Painting is a nice way to make the fireplace more modern and it only takes a few steps, you could be done in an afternoon.

Take a brick cleaning solution and thoroughly clean the area you wish to paint. Once the area is dry, tape it off protecting the surrounding walls. Use a primer made specifically for painting bricks and prime the area. When the primer is dry, go ahead and give the bricks a coat of paint, making sure to get in all the tiny cracks and cover them thoroughly. After the first coat dries, apply a second coat. When your second coat is dry, you’re done. It’s that simple. Make sure that when you are considering your paint options, you pick a paint that is oil based and will tolerate the heat well.

You can, of course, just as easily paint the mantel as well, changing the whole look of the fireplace completely.

Overlay

Another fantastic way to spruce up your current fireplace and make it a bit more modern is to give it a good old do it yourself facelift. Depending on what style you are going for and what aesthetic you currently have in your home, you can choose wood panels, for a decorative fireplace, tile, marble slabs or any other material that you think might look good. Once you have chosen your material, you can cover the brick with it, giving your fireplace an instant update with your own personal flare. Know that painting bricks is a permanent change and you should be sure of your decision before you begin.

If you choose to use tile, you can use larger tiles and create a nice pattern, or you could use smaller tiles creating a mosaic. Take the finished space and fill the fireplace with candles, creating a warm modern piece of art. This will be an interesting and eclectic conversation piece that you can be proud to show off.

Don’t forget to consider the codes in your area for construction when taking on projects such as these. Especially concerning fireplaces, there may be rules regarding gas lines, or concerns about gas vs wood burning.

How to make your fireplace stand out - Guest Post

When it comes to our home's interiors, many people don't make the most of a room's internal features. Whether it's sash windows, cornicing or a traditional fireplace, making a room's focal point can not only make your home valuable and nicer to live in, they also make it more sellable too.

Most homes either have a fireplace installed or have the potential to have a fireplace fitted, so with that in mind here's some ideas for you to think about to make it stand out.

1 - Get the right floor

The flooring surrounding your fireplace can really help make it stand out. Components such as the hearth (which is also known as the fireplace floor) can also be used to accentuate your fireplace. It can be made of various materials such as tile, brick, cement or flagstones. With that in mind, you need to pick the right flooring depending on the style of your fireplace and its hearth.

Tiles work particularly well when it comes to accentuating your fireplace - especially those which are laid diagonally, rather than vertically. These Karndean flooring tiles can be laid to meet the fireplace either side of the surround, and continuing upward. In this way your fireplace will not only draw people’s eyes towards it as a main focal feature of your room, it will create a modern and contemporary feel. But remember, be sure to use colours that are already in place in the room to keep the design as seamless as possible.

2 - Paint your fireplace

Another way of making your fireplace into a stunning focal point is to paint the fire surround. Painting it a neutral colour will blend easily with a wide variety of home decors and styles and give your fireplace a new lease of life. Brick-Anew's Paint Kits come in many different colors - from Twilight Taupe for that natural sandstone feel (perfect for beige colour tones) to Misty Harbor for the contemporary room (perfect for black and grey) and furniture.

3 - Buy some art artwork

Many homes overlook the power of interesting artwork in accentuating features of a room. The space above your fireplace is critical and nothing will draw more attention towards it like a beautiful piece of art. A bold painting will pull together decorative aspects of a room - and get people talking too. But you don't need to splash out on an expensive piece of art - you could even place interesting objects inside it to maintain it as a focal point.

4 - Add a screen

Fireplace screens are more than just a mesh to cover your fireplace - they can help add safety to your room by giving it a decorative look too. You can buy fireplace screens in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes, so measure up your fireplace before you head to the shops.

5 - Treat the wall surround

Finally, you can help make your fireplace a focal point by treating the wall behind it. Instead of painting or wallpapering it, you could treat the wall itself with a textured wall effect to add an extra dimension to your wall. If you have a working fireplace, a textured effect will add a glow which will dance along the cladding.

Reluctance to paint that brick fireplace?

I sent my friend’s in Kansas a new brick paint kit, one that I have used for the last few years. They were very pleased with the results and I wanted to share with you their photos and thoughts.

“Everything turned out great!  My wife and I were a little reluctant to use paint on our fireplace.  The brick paint kit had everything in it and it was very easy to use.  We should have done this a long time ago. Our friends and family are extremely impressed and can’t believe we did it ourselves. We can’t wait to install the Heatilator Fireplace Glass Door that you recommended. The whole room already has a new feel to it. We will send you more pictures when it is complete. Thank you so much.”

Here is what I sent them:

Heatilator Fireplace Doors - Redo it yourself with quality

Fireplace glass doors offer a safe window into our fire, keeping ash, smoke and excessive heat inside the fireplace, where they should stay.  They are made to tolerate the high heat of the fire, to which they are in close proximity.  The glass doors improve general fireplace safety, protecting the immediate area around it, facilitate ease in caring for the hearth, and add elegance to the look of a fireplace.

Glass doors are able to stand the heat of fire because of a special heat treatment process, which shields the glass from the high and near heat of the fire.  Thus, glass that has been heat treated can tolerate much higher temperatures than can normal glass.  Glass treated in this manner is made to last and any worries regarding the safety of glass doors in such close proximity to excessive heat can be calmed.  Safety of glass doors does not end in their treatment; fireplace glass doors add safety to the whole area in proximity to the fireplace.

Fireplace glass doors are one of the greatest additions to fireplace safety and comfort of recent times.  Protecting the immediate area near the fire from excessive heat as well as from burning embers, glass doors provide a neat partition.  The glass doors manage to control the size of the fire and the temperature of heat in the room.  Glass doors are created to slide open or closed effortlessly.  Thus, glass doors will easily slide closed to allow you to contain excessive heat of the fireplace when needed.  If the fire suddenly gets bigger than expected, closing the doors will reduce the flame by limiting air to the oxygen-hungry fire.  It is wise to remember that while we have learned to control fire by containing it in a fireplace, the elements still can wield their unpredictable powers over us.

Even in the fireplace, a burning ember or a flying spark cannot be completely controlled.  Fireplace glass doors will control this, and ensure that no leaping sparks manage to burn either your rug or your friend who happens to be sitting near the fire!

Fireplace glass doors are also a desirable style element and keep the hearth tidy.  Extra embers and sparks will no longer leave burn marks on rugs nearby, no longer leave extra gray streaks or piles of ash to clean.  The embers and sparks will burn their lives out inside the fireplace.  While keeping the area neater, the doors dress up a fireplace – the right finishing touch for an image of an elegant fireplace.  Glass doors framed by a mantel and a modern fireplace make a strong impression, commanding the attention of all who see the room.  The frame the glass doors provide into the fire creates a picture that will complement any of the framed art pieces on or above the mantel.

Seemingly minor in the scheme of the fireplace, glass doors prove quite useful in the safety and care of your fire.  Adding the defined look that glass provides, fireplace glass doors prove to be the most chic of all the tools used to control and care for your fire.  Glass doors will improve the look of your fireplace, simultaneously giving you clear control of the fire burning inside it.

Dark & Dreary to Bright & Cheery Brick Painted Fireplace

My husband and I just happened onto this brick paint product online when searching for what to do with our dreaded fireplace. We loved the bricks and didn't want to "cover" them as some design sites had suggested. We were thrilled when we found Brick-A-New online.

It took me a day to choose a color then we ordered right away. Thanks Wendy for taking our call and processing our order to Canada. The product came within a week. My husband and I completed the project in the evenings over a few nights. We have very bumpy bricks which was a concern for us when we ordered, but the standard fireplace paint kit covered our fireplace, it took about 1 hour or so to apply the base coat. Then I was able to apply the other colors two at a time over a couple of evenings.

What a transformation I would walk by our room that used to be the dark and dreary den and would do a double take when I saw the painted bricks even though I had done them myself. It was super easy and you can't make a mistake. Just apply and step back and say I did that! Then show all your friends your new room.

I would recommend this product to anyone. And I already have, friends, family and co-workers alike have been amazed when I show them the photo's.

We're just one step away from our fireplace being finished, we're saving up for our gas fireplace insert now.
