Decorating Tips and Tricks for your Fireplace

A fireplace can be a great addition to any room, giving the space character and a unique identity of its own. Functional fireplaces are also a great convenience in chilly winter months, giving homeowners the opportunity to cozy up to a warm flame and shake off the cold. When designing a room that contains a fireplace, it is essential to keep several different factors in mind to ensure that the fireplace is optimized effectively. The following tips offer a great starting point for those working with a home fireplace.

Working with Size

It is important to keep the scale of the fireplace in mind when designing for a room that contains one of these features. For example, should a small fireplace be located in a large room, increasing the overall presence of the fireplace will help make it a focal point. This can be done by painting the mantel and surrounding wall in the same color. In turn utilizing complementary colors in the textiles and decor of the room will help tie the entire look together, giving the space a cohesive feel. Large fireplaces can be made more appealing by utilizing the space above the mantel to display a large portrait or mirror.

Positioning the Fireplace

Homes that contain a fireplace already will need to be designed around the feature's location. For spaces where a fireplace will be added, it is important to think about the potential location options. Many contemporary homes feature fireplaces at eye level, allowing the fireplace to take the position of a painting or traditional wall decoration. This allows the fireplace to not only be functional, but also incorporates it into rooms where a floor position may not be ideal.

Off-Season Decoration

Many homeowners neglect their fireplaces during warmer months, leaving the fireplace empty and devoid of activity. Rather than allowing the fireplace to go to waste, this space can actually serve as an interesting display space. Homeowners can use their imaginations to come up with inventive displays that will showcase the personality of the home's residents, while also giving the fireplace a way to shine without a log burning year round.

Fireplaces are not only a beautiful design feature, but they can add a personal and homey feel to any space. By keeping the fireplace in mind when designing the room's surroundings, homeowners can make certain their space looks clean and dynamic. This will allow make certain that the home's residents are able to take advantage of the functional aspects of this design feature.

Christmas Decorating Ideas for a Fireplace

The fireplace is an important part of Christmas. It’s, of course, where Santa comes barreling down to leave all of his presents under the Christmas tree. To give Santa a great first impression of your home, and a beautiful focal point for guests, decorate it with these ideas.

Starting from Top to Bottom: The Mantel

The mantel is the first place you should start decorating. You can place pine needle garland across it with or without lighting wrapped around it. Most people will also place candelabra in the middle of the mantel that may or may not be lit on a special evening.

If possible, some homeowners will place a wreath just about the mantel using removable tape to the wall or brick to secure a hook to hang it on. The wreath often attracts people to the fireplace, which then leads them to look at the mantel and then the fireplace.

If you don’t already have a mirror above your mantel, this might be another option to consider. Just as you would place a wreath above the mantel, you can place a mirror, but with a much more secure set up. When you have the Christmas lights on, you’ll see them glisten in the mirror, which creates a beautiful ambiance.

Decorating the Fireplace

Underneath the mantel, many people will place a decorative fireplace cover. You can find Christmas themed ones, which greatly enhances the look of your fireplace.

If you are entertaining, you can remove the cover easily to light a fire. The fire is always a comforting, warm, and beautiful piece of décor for a cold, winter night.

If you are unable to light the fire due to medical issues or hazards, consider placing large candles in the fireplace. You can light the candles and create a look of fire.

You can also place candelabra in the fireplace, which holds candles in place when burning them for a long time.

A Christmas Hearth

The hearth is the bottom ledge of your fireplace. Some will be flush to the floor, while others will be raised. In either case, you can decorate it with standing decoration such as a small Christmas tree, nutcracker, or stuffed Santa.

You can also place a basket with wood inside of it to feed the fire as needed. Keep the logs arranged neatly to keep it as a useful decorative piece.

Warnings When Decorating a Fireplace

Always keep in mind that if you are lighting a fire in your fireplace that some decorations are flammable. Keep these decorations away from the fireplace.

Never place anything so close to the opening of the fireplace that can be set on fire when it sparks. Also, never leave a fire unattended, and if you have can’t extinguish your fire before leaving home, install a fireplace cover that ensures the fire stays within the fireplace.

By being safe and having fun decorating your fireplace, you’ll enjoy a peaceful and joyful holiday season in your beautiful home.

Top YouTube Videos on Decorating Your Fireplace

Fireplaces are well known for the comfort, warmth, and relaxation that they bring to a home. They serve as the center around which a family can gather, a common space aside from the ever-present television. Fireplaces can also double as display spaces: mantels are commonly home to pictures of loved ones and often serve as canvases for holiday decorations. Here are a few YouTube videos that show some ways to get creative with fireplace decoration.
With summer winding down and fall just around the corner, the time for a change in decoration is coming. This video contains some helpful tips on decorating the fireplace for autumn.
  • Use natural elements that give the feeling of the fall season: pumpkins, gourds, warm colors, and berries.
  • Use candles for extra color and added ambience.
  • Antique books create visual interest, an aged feel, and a nice aesthetic. They can also be used to add height.
There are other videos to keep your fireplace looking great year-round: winter, spring, and summer.
A lot of homes have fireplaces, but not everyone makes full use of them. If you don’t regularly hold fires, you can still make your fireplace a focal point:
  • Use your empty fireplace as a display case.
  • Use wood, river rocks, and dried flowers for a natural, rustic look.
  • Use candles and a mirror to mimic the ambience of a fireplace fire.
  • Fireplaces work as a great frame for plants, boxes, and books.
This video has some general tips for decorating mantels, particularly the best ways to use a mirror as part of an attractive display.
  • Make sure that the mirror isn’t reflecting anything unsightly or distracting.
  • Add other elements to balance the display.
  • Use plants to bridge the gaps between objects.
With these techniques, you can make your fireplace a unique and attractive focal point and comfortable gathering space in your home, even when a fire isn’t burning.

Fireplace Safety

Aesthetics can mix safely with functioning fireplace

When renovating or installing a fireplace, homeowners should be aware of the many options they have and planning required for each type of option.

For example, it’s possible that your fireplace will be used in an air conditioned home in Scottsdale, Ariz. mainly for aesthetic purposes since it rarely gets cold enough in Scottsdale to require a blazing fire. Plus, the owners have envisioned the fireplace area as a place to place pictures of family and other treasured heirlooms. As the fire place is to be used primarily for aesthetic purposes, an enclosed or other kind of has supplied or fire log fed fireplace will do fine, even if it is not what people who live near ski resorts would think of as a “real fireplace.” A real fireplace used to warm the home brings the potential for real danger and each year in the U.S. thousands of homes are destroyed by careless fireplace fires or chimney fires.

So before planning a renovation, ask yourself how much of the purpose of the fireplace is decorative and how much functional. How many irreplaceable valuables do you want near the fireplace. Check your homeowners policy for any provisions against loss for accidental loss due to fireplace malfunction, and language regarding the effect of comparative negligence on the part of the homeowner if a fire causes loss of personal property.

If tackling an installation for the first time, make sure your project is up to code. Otherwise, failure to maintain a proper fireplace could impair your ability to recover under your policy should a fire result.

Also, determine right away whether you intend to be the installer of the project, or whether you would rather hire out to a contractor the choice of a system, i.e., wood burning, gas heating, or whether you have the skills to do the job yourself.

If this is your first experience with installation of an HVAC system of any kind, figure in the time and effort necessary to get up to speed, and whether you necessarily want your first such project to be the family fireplace. On the other hand, someone who is handy and used to working with systems around the home, whether they be electrical plumbing and the like, might find fireplace installation right up their alley. If you’re a DIY, check with the local authorities, including homeowner associations and city county licensing types to make sure you are installing something that is up to code so that you don’t run into problems later on.

To avoid chimney fires, keep the chimney swept at least once annually. In a wood burning fire place, creosote and soot can combine into a combustible coating that can be lit by a spark and a subsequent chimney fire. The upward air draft inside the chimney supplies oxygen to the fire, so chimney fires spread rapidly.

Thats why an industrial strength fire extinguisher should part of every decor scheme. Fire extinguishers and other fireplace accessories can be found at toolhq.com.au.

In short, before undertaking an installation or renovation, think about whether you want the fireplace for heat warming or aesthetic purposes. Consider whether you want to do it yourself or contract out the job and make sure the installation is up to code, and covered in your homeowners insurance.

Knowing the answers to these questions in advance will mean a smoother installation and greater enjoyment from your fireplace system.

Best Rooms For a Fireplace

There is a special feeling you get when entering a room with a fireplace. Many rooms can have one, but what are the best rooms for a fireplace? While fireplaces are most frequently found in the living room, more and more homes have them located in the kitchen or in the bedroom. If you're unsure where to place your fireplace, then try to look at some of the pros and cons of having the fireplace in each place.

The Living Room – Having a fireplace here is great because you can start the fire before friends or family arrive and have the room take on a glow it doesn't normally feature. There's nothing better than watching a movie on the screen over the mantle with a warm fireplace and a bag of popcorn while surrounded by your favorite people. The living room is also a central location in most houses, and the heat can more easily reach other parts of the home.

The Kitchen – While some older kitchens have wood stoves for cooking, others have full-sized fireplaces. Fireplaces in kitchens can definitely add a new dimension to the overall design plans of a kitchen, but one should consider that fireplaces take up a lot of space that could otherwise be used for more counter and cabinet space. With today’s modern conveniences, most homeowners would rather have more space in the kitchen to be used for other purposes.

The Bedroom – Anywhere a fireplace is installed in a home people can benefit from the warms that it produces, but in the bedroom a fireplace can have much more of an impact on the room’s atmosphere than anywhere else. It will certainly add a bit of romance for the alone time with your partner. Having a mantle over the fireplace can be a great place to store personal items for easy access.

Overall, everyone agrees that fireplaces are really cool!  They certainly add a cozy element to your home. Just make absolutely sure that you check your local building codes before you start thinking about adding a fireplace into your home décor plans. You can also consult with a local expert to find out whether a wood or electric fireplace is best for your home.  After that, you can decide which room above you liked the best!

Fireplaces through the Seasons - Guest Post

If there is only one fireplace in your house, it’s usually in the lounge, the sitting room, the family room; whatever you like to call the hub of your home. If you don’t have a fireplace at home yet, you probably feel like you would like one. The fireplace is a very practical centerpiece to any room in the house, and it is also the type of centerpiece that will evolve over the seasons.

The Fireplace in Winter

Winter is the time when a fireplace really comes into its own. It’s the season fireplaces were made for. There’s nothing better than curling up on the armchair in front of a warm roaring fire with loved ones, or watching the family pet doze on the rug by the hearth. A real log fire burning in the home is a treat for all the senses. Staring into the dancing flames is relaxing; smelling the roasting logs is soothing and feeling the glowing warmth keeps the winter blues away. And of course every fireplace places a vital role in the family home at Christmas – not only is it a place to leave cookies and milk for Santa and hang the stockings, but it’s also perfect for decorating with a holly garland or wreath.

The Fireplace in Spring

As spring time starts to get a little warmer, it’s likely that there won’t be the need to have the fire lit so often. But that’s okay because when it isn’t lit the logs still look decorative and the mantelpiece can be put to good use for displaying Easter and Mother’s day cards, and fresh flowers cut from the garden. Some families even like to have a small Easter tree and the mantelpiece is the perfect setting. When there aren’t flowers or celebrations, pictures and ornaments look stylish on the mantelpiece.

The Fireplace in Summer

You almost certainly won’t need to light the fire if you have warm summers in your area.  At this time of year, the fireplace becomes an absolute centrepiece for any room. If you are one of the many house swapping USA residents that like to take part in home exchanges for your vacation, you may want to screen off the fire to prevent your house guests using it for safety reasons. There are a lot of different types of fire screens available and some antique ones are very beautiful. If you are creative you could make your own fire screen using wood decorated with decoupage. Another way to show that the fireplace is out of use for the summer is to use it for floral decorations. Instead of the smell of roasting wood, you will fill your home with the smell of fresh cut bouquets instead and brighten up your living room.

The Fireplace in Fall

As the temperature begins to drop again, you’ll probably be looking longingly at your fireplace in anticipation of the weather becoming cold enough for you to light the fire.  Fall is a time to dust off the hearth, cut some fresh fire wood and get ready for some cosy nights in. If you’re feeling extravagant the first time you light the fire putting some natural spices such as vanilla or cinnamon in to burn with the logs will throw beautiful scents around your home.

Great Ideas for Decorating Your Fireplace

Fireplaces are warm, cozy sources of heat and illumination. Whether you have a fireplace in your living room, bedroom, study or any other room in your home, you have surely noticed its tendency to draw visual attention and become the centerpiece of your room decor. Sometimes, a fireplace can be so overpowering it is difficult to decorate the rest of the room well. Other times, you may fail to take advantage of the opportunity to make your fireplace look its absolute best. These three simple ideas for decorating your fireplace can be used alone or together to bring your room to life and give your fireplace the spotlight it truly deserves.

Fireplace Doors and Screens

While the aesthetic of a fireplace is generally a pleasant one, in reality, a fireplace that is used frequently can become dirty, smoky or grimy. Wood-burning fireplaces can even send clouds of soot and dust all over the room, requiring you to perform more frequent and thorough cleaning to keep your home spotless. You can effectively reduce the problem of fireplace debris, hide a less than perfectly cleaned hearth from view and add a delightful decorative touch with the easy installation of fireplace doors or screens.
Fireplace Doors are available in styles and colors to suit any fireplace in any home. Doors are simple to install and require very little maintenance over time. Best of all, they are a fast and affordable way to give your entire fireplace a facelift and breathe new life into your room.

Decorative Mantels

While a well-maintained fireplace is a decorative element in its own right, it also removes your access to a great deal of wall space that could be used for placing furniture or hanging artwork. Sometimes rooms with fireplaces can be difficult to arrange and decorate simply because the fireplace itself takes up such a significant amount of space. By adding a decorative mantel along the top of your fireplace, you give yourself additional storage and display space for photos, knick-knacks and other small items.

Mantels can be made of wood, stone, composites or any number of other materials. They are available in sizes to suit any fireplace and colors and designs to suit any decor. A mantel can be the perfect place to display just a few treasured items in a position of prominence, allowing you to maximize your decorating efforts despite your reduced wall space.

Fireplace Accessories

Accessories such as pokers and log holders can give your fireplace a bit of flair and personality. Visitors to your home will be aware your fireplace is not merely for show, but an integral component of your home's functionality and aesthetic sense. Accessories can be made of materials and available in colors to complement your existing designs or to add a highlighted splash of color in an otherwise unused space.

Enjoy The Romance Of A Fireplace

A peek into human history will reveal that even in the pre-historic period, people were using a fireplace to keep their caves warmer during chill weather conditions. But, as civilization grew, there were many innovations and the types that are being used now are classier and easier models. It is true that we get many benefits from fireplaces. Every person aims to get a specific benefit but the common thread that binds all these people is the love of fire. Let us look at some of the points about fireplaces and how to have them:
- You can not find a person who does not agree with the fact that a fireplace provides a perfect romantic setting, coziness and comfort to one and all. Especially during winter, when chilly weather conditions prevail, you can throw your blanket away and still feel the warmth provided by the fireplace.
- Before the modern days heating was invented, it was the traditional or classic fireplace that was being used. Even now, you can find such traditional arrangements and chimneys in many of the homes. Wood is burned in them for producing heat and warmth to the people living in these houses. But, only if ventilation via the chimney is quite efficient, you can have optimum benefit from this type. The chimney should also be cleaned periodically. Some people make it a point to clean these chimneys once or twice a year.

Fireplace Decorating

Fireplace Decorating is a Great way to Spruce up an old Hearth

Do you want to have a fireplace that attracts attention and makes you look like an interior decorator? You can do it. The basic steps are to clean, paint, make additions and decorate. The result will be a showcase and focal point for the entire room. You can add items to the mantel, the wall above the fireplace or on the hearth and these items can be changed based upon the seasons and even holidays.
First, clean every part that’s dirty with soot and smoke including the firebox, hearth and mantel. Clean out those ashes and pieces of partially burned wood. You may have major accumulations of smoke, soot and grime from years of use. Some scouring powder with beach and a good stiff bristled brush may be enough to get the grime off the brick but a bottle of inexpensive fireplace cleaner that is specially formulated to clean brick will make the job much easier and make you more inclined to do it periodically.

Getting the soot off the inside also requires scrubbing with a brush and vinegar which will dissolve most of the stains. Something stronger may be required but try this first. The inside of your firebox can be painted with black fireplace paint to cover any stains. That will make the box appear to be new.

Add some fireplace glass doors if you don’t have them or consider upgrading if they’re in bad shape. The fireplace glass doors keep out small children and pets while making the fireplace more energy efficient. Put a hearth rug out if you burn wood as it helps protect the floor from stray, burning embers. Buy a screen in brass or black wrought iron if you want to burn wood with your glass doors open. It looks good and protects.

If the outside brick is older and covered with fireplace grime, a fireplace resurfacing kit can work miracles. It’s not the same as slapping some paint on the brick but makes it look new and professional. An amateur can do the job in a weekend. Kits come with all the tools, instructions and cans of stuff you need. Be sure to choose a fireplace paint as some types of paint cannot withstand the heat of a fireplace. Carefully chosen colors will complement your room décor.

Decorating the mantel and hearth is the fun part. The mantel can be the key to the entire look. It’s usually the first thing noticed since it’s at eye level. If you don’t have a mantel, one may be purchased with a wide variety of styles and costs. If you aren’t ready for the mantel or don’t have the budget, the wall above the fireplace can be adorned with hanging wreathes, clocks, pictures, or other art objects. You can do both wall and mantel but it’s easy to overdo.

Selecting the proper objects to decorate your fireplace is crucial. Use items that show off your personal tastes. Implements such as a toolset, andirons, and wood holder may vary widely in type and style. Cast iron, copper and pewter are some of the materials available. Add fireplace glass doors to provide extra security, energy efficiency and style.

Decorate your mantel as a separate but complementary showcase that enhances the fireplace and the surrounding area. Make this area personal but tasteful. This is a great location for portraits or landscape paintings on a small scale as well as art objects such as vases or sculptures. A mantel is a good home for family heirlooms and other things dear to the decorator personally. Vases or candles may be placed on both ends to provide a sense of balance if balance is what you’re seeking. Placing a plant on one side of the mantel or hearth with a different item on the other may suit you better. If it’s on the hearth, this could be the fireplace tools on one end.

Decorate your fireplace for the seasons to add a little variation and spice. Pumpkins and gourds make it feel like fall. Pinecones and greenery feels more like winter. Spring and summer seasons call for some floral additions. Candles can almost always be worked in. Lights may be placed on the mantel to enhance any of these ensembles. Don’t forget the stocking hung with care at Christmas or a Hanukkah menorah to celebrate your holiday.

Comfortable chairs near the fireplace invite family and guests to sit there after a meal. Add any items that entice you to the area. Fireplace decorating allows you to show your personality and gives you a place to display the objects you are proud of and want others to see. It’s not a onetime event. Keep changing things to refresh the room and the lovely centerpiece you’ve created. Keep it in good taste rather than gaudy.

Is Your Fireplace Ready for a Summer Makeover?

By Guest Writer, Pam (Home Décor Diva)

I recently had an embarrassing experience that almost forced me to toss the crown of Family Decorating Diva. But there’s still time to fix it and regain my title, especially now that summer’s here and the kids are off at day camp for a few blessed weeks. Let me tell you, in my household, these summer months are about the only time things slow down for even a minute. This makes it the perfect time for some serious deep-cleaning—and, on a more fun note, a great opportunity for those needed upgrades to our home’s décor. Call it Operation Summer Spruce-Up. I always look forward to breaking out the seasonal-themed dishes decorated with watermelons and investing in a new welcome mat to replace the ratty one that’s seen winter’s wear and tear—and this year? It’s time for a fresh coat of fireplace paint.

There’s a story behind this...

I don’t know about you, but in my house, the winter months mean one thing: a packed schedule of family get-togethers. Much as I enjoy these warm times together, enough is enough if you know what I mean. At our New Year’s Brunch, my mother-in-law walked through my living room and made this comment, “Pam? This room is sort of, well, blah, don’t you think?”

As much as I hate to admit it: Folks, she was right. (I’d never tell Her this, but thank goodness Someone isn’t internet-savvy!) I looked over at the fireplace. Without the holiday candles and trimmings that we’d just taken down, it looked bare and boring—and worse, the coarse brown brick just looked dated and flat-out crummy.

Never fear! The summer months are the perfect time to fix that. With no mothers-in-law looking, it’s the ideal time to refurbish the old fireplace with a fresh coat of paint and some unique decorative touches. I’m thinking a raffia swag of seashells over the mantel, accented with some beachy accessories and photos from our Florida trip a few years back. (Wishful thinking!)

As for that awful brick, sure, I could go crazy and insist we demolish the whole fireplace and install a new one, but I don’t want to see the Mister throw his back out with a sledge hammer, and the kids would be running around in a cloud of dust for weeks. Frankly, I’m not interested. After doing some thoughtful research, I’ve found an easier, more budget-friendly alternative: a coat of tasteful fireplace paint from Brick-Anew. I’m thinking Twilight Taupe right now, and from where I stand, it looks like this might just be the one of the easier steps in Operation Summer Spruce-up. I’ll letcha know.

How to Decorate the Fireplace Mantel for the Holidays

Decorating your home for Christmas is an excellent way to get into the holiday spirit. Adorning the fireplace mantel with holiday décor is a must. It’s a wonderful way to welcome Santa in style while enhancing your room’s focal point. Don’t know how or where to start? Here’s some inspiration and simple how to:

Style - Choose a style that would coordinate with your home’s existing look such as traditional, modern, shabby chic, rustic or eclectic.

Color - Selecting a color palette is another step in decorating your holiday mantel. The colors you choose will help communicate your theme. The neutral and green color scheme in the nature inspired fireplace mantel on the left reiterates the home’s contemporary style. Vibrant color pops on the white mantel to the right. This modern look is achieved by wrapping three canvases in solid-color gift wrap and tying them in bright ribbons. Festive ornaments in a large glass vase and atop stacked wrapped gifts are added to the mantel. The look is balanced with colorful garland and stockings.

Basics - Select festive elements such as holiday stockings, wreaths, garland, swags or pine branches you’d like to include in your design. This holiday mantel by Pottery Barn is an excellent example that incorporates the basics beautifully.

Embellish - Continue to add and layer holiday items such as pine cones, ornaments, nutcrackers, candles, ribbons and seashells that best communicate your design style. The mantel on the left is a delightful display of garland and holiday ornaments around an existing mirror. Pine cones are used to create a simple, rustic mantel on the right. If you live in an area where you can collect pine cones, this is a wonderful, natural and seasonal look that doesn’t require much money.

Balance - Determine if you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical look, but either way strive to create visual balance. The holiday mantel on the left is an example of an elegant, yet simple symmetrical design. The centered wooden horses and lit garland & wreath are perfect compliments to the surrounding décor. On the right, the asymmetrical mantel is decked in a trio vibrant red stockings and carnation wreaths. The white pottery filled with Ireland swag of red and green ornaments and bells balances the display beautifully. To achieve an asymmetrical mantel look, group odd-numbered objects in various sizes and harmonious colors.

Celebrate - Make decorating fun, not a chore. Sip apple cider, turn up the Christmas music and enlist family members or friends to help decorate the mantel with you. You will find it helpful to have an extra set of eyes and enjoy the company of loved ones – the spirit of Christmas! Enjoy.
