Decorating Tips and Tricks for your Fireplace

A fireplace can be a great addition to any room, giving the space character and a unique identity of its own. Functional fireplaces are also a great convenience in chilly winter months, giving homeowners the opportunity to cozy up to a warm flame and shake off the cold. When designing a room that contains a fireplace, it is essential to keep several different factors in mind to ensure that the fireplace is optimized effectively. The following tips offer a great starting point for those working with a home fireplace.

Working with Size

It is important to keep the scale of the fireplace in mind when designing for a room that contains one of these features. For example, should a small fireplace be located in a large room, increasing the overall presence of the fireplace will help make it a focal point. This can be done by painting the mantel and surrounding wall in the same color. In turn utilizing complementary
colors in the textiles and decor of the room will help tie the entire look together, giving the space a cohesive feel. Large fireplaces can be made more appealing by utilizing the space above the
mantel to display a large portrait or mirror.

Positioning the Fireplace

Homes that contain a fireplace already will need to be designed around the feature's location. For spaces where a fireplace will be added, it is important to think about the potential location options. Many contemporary homes feature fireplaces at eye level, allowing the fireplace to take the position of a painting or traditional wall decoration. This allows the fireplace to not only be functional, but also incorporates it into rooms where a floor position may not be ideal.

Off-Season Decoration

Many homeowners neglect their fireplaces during warmer months, leaving the fireplace empty and devoid of activity. Rather than allowing the fireplace to go to waste, this space can actually serve as an interesting display space. Homeowners can use their imaginations to come up with inventive displays that will showcase the personality of the home's residents, while also giving the fireplace a way to shine without a log burning year round.

Fireplaces are not only a beautiful design feature, but they can add a personal and homey feel to any space. By keeping the fireplace in mind when designing the room's surroundings, homeowners can make certain their space looks clean and dynamic. This will make certain that the home's residents are able to take advantage of the functional aspects of this design feature.

4 Fireplace Decoration Tips

A fireplace is not only great to keep you warm in the winter months, but is a fantastic focal point of your room. The design you choose for your fireplace determines the design of the rest of the room. This can be a great guide for your interior design plans, or it can clash with them. To avoid this clash, be sure to choose the right fireplace style and add the right decorations for your chosen design to further highlight the fireplace. Here are some tips on combining design styles with fireplace decorations:

Natural
To create a natural look in your home, consider painting your room in a crisp white. Then place a selection of plants with large and lush green plants (for example ferns) on your fireplace mantel. Use similar fresh colors throughout the room to mimic the natural look. You can use bright yellows and pinks or stick to the lush green of the plants. Designs of your cushions and rugs can further emphasize this fireplace theme by opting for pictures of plants, forests or stripes in different shades of green for these items. This natural look is very popular during the spring and summer months as it invites the energy of these months into your home.

Chic
The chic look is highly popular as it adds a balance of luxury design and creativity to your home, without this actually costing you the price of a luxury design. Paler colors including pastels in green, yellow, blue and pink are often used for this chic look, and this can be mimicked in your fireplace decorations. A pair of wooden shutters painted in a charming pastel green with a wreath made out of twigs from your garden painted red sitting on the mantel of your fireplace is one example of creating a chic look. Another is placing a selection of different sized mirrors all with elaborate looking frames above your fireplace. The frames can be spray painted in gold to add a luxurious look to them. The key to the chic look is to create an expensive looking design, but not actually spending the money.

Artistic
The artistic design is a continuation of the chic one, but instead of it looking luxurious the aim is to make the design look unique and personalised. The wall space of the fireplace is used to paint a mural or picture which ties in the theme of the room. For example, a cast-iron fireplace with a funnel leading toward a wooden mantel is continued with a painting of a bare tree and its crown. This can then be transferred to patterned wallpaper surrounding the fireplace and further highlighting the design of bare trees.

Another example is to paint a picture of your choice in your favourite art styles, i.e. pointillism or impressionism, over your fireplace. As both these styles use very bright colors, you can choose the main colors from your painting for the accessories of the room such as the rug, cushions, lamp shades and even curtains.

If you decide to follow one of these design tips and want give your fireplace a new dose of paint, remember to use fireplace paint designed specifically for fireplaces. These tips are intended to ignite your creativity and to remind you to include your fireplace in your interior design plans.

Fireplaces through the Seasons - Guest Post

If there is only one fireplace in your house, it’s usually in the lounge, the sitting room, the family room; whatever you like to call the hub of your home. If you don’t have a fireplace at home yet, you probably feel like you would like one. The fireplace is a very practical centerpiece to any room in the house, and it is also the type of centerpiece that will evolve over the seasons.

The Fireplace in Winter

Winter is the time when a fireplace really comes into its own. It’s the season fireplaces were made for. There’s nothing better than curling up on the armchair in front of a warm roaring fire with loved ones, or watching the family pet doze on the rug by the hearth. A real log fire burning in the home is a treat for all the senses. Staring into the dancing flames is relaxing; smelling the roasting logs is soothing and feeling the glowing warmth keeps the winter blues away. And of course every fireplace places a vital role in the family home at Christmas – not only is it a place to leave cookies and milk for Santa and hang the stockings, but it’s also perfect for decorating with a holly garland or wreath.

The Fireplace in Spring

As spring time starts to get a little warmer, it’s likely that there won’t be the need to have the fire lit so often. But that’s okay because when it isn’t lit the logs still look decorative and the mantelpiece can be put to good use for displaying Easter and Mother’s day cards, and fresh flowers cut from the garden. Some families even like to have a small Easter tree and the mantelpiece is the perfect setting. When there aren’t flowers or celebrations, pictures and ornaments look stylish on the mantelpiece.

The Fireplace in Summer

You almost certainly won’t need to light the fire if you have warm summers in your area.  At this time of year, the fireplace becomes an absolute centrepiece for any room. If you are one of the many house swapping USA residents that like to take part in home exchanges for your vacation, you may want to screen off the fire to prevent your house guests using it for safety reasons. There are a lot of different types of fire screens available and some antique ones are very beautiful. If you are creative you could make your own fire screen using wood decorated with decoupage. Another way to show that the fireplace is out of use for the summer is to use it for floral decorations. Instead of the smell of roasting wood, you will fill your home with the smell of fresh cut bouquets instead and brighten up your living room.

The Fireplace in Fall

As the temperature begins to drop again, you’ll probably be looking longingly at your fireplace in anticipation of the weather becoming cold enough for you to light the fire.  Fall is a time to dust off the hearth, cut some fresh fire wood and get ready for some cosy nights in. If you’re feeling extravagant the first time you light the fire putting some natural spices such as vanilla or cinnamon in to burn with the logs will throw beautiful scents around your home.

A Very Special Birthday Mantel

by Emily at 52 Mantels Our featured blogger this week.

My sweet baby girl had a fun party on Saturday! She officially turns one on Tuesday (sniff, sniff) but Saturday she celebrated herself silly.
We're talking cake on her face, skipping some naps, playing hard as she can, silly.

And, then she slept. For 14 glorious hours. And, I slept too.

A little birdie told me you'd like to see our "tweet" party mantel. Why don't you fly on over to our nest and...
Yes, I can go on and on like that (really. I can.), but, I'll spare you my word play and get to the details.

Like I mentioned on Friday when I gave a tutorial for our inexpensive invitations, the party was done in a bird theme. Hence, the large bird. And, small birds. And, birds' nests. And, birdcage. And, bird accents. And, bird picture frame. And, bird scrapbook paper.
Yes, we stuck to our theme

An Awe Inspiring Redo

I just completed the entire redo of our brick fireplace and surrounding wall.
The wall is pretty large so it took my some time and a lot of elbow grease
but in the end it looks beautiful.

We chose Twilight Taupe and also painted the inside of the fireplace.
I am glad we chose Brick-Anew instead of just painting the brick all one color.
The brick still has depth and texture and it is a one of a kind wall.
This has been money well spent. Thank you for a great
product!!

Fireplace Decorating Ideas

One Great Fireplace Decorating Idea is Painting the Brick with a Fireplace Paint Kit (Above)

Don’t you just love fireplaces? They can be such a restful focal point with a nice fire in the winter. They can also be a beautiful centerpiece and even the heart of a room. It’s considered to be a permanent part of your house, at least without making a major capital investment. They add character and elegance as long as they complement the décor.

What do you do if your fireplace is beginning to look old and tired? Is there anything you can do without spending your life’s savings? We have a few ideas for you to brighten that big black box. Changing the exterior facing is one big option. If the fireplace is brick, some of the fireplace ideas might be prohibitively expensive. Replacing the brick is an option that may cost thousands of dollars and requires professional help. Making them look new again is something that is not some expensive or difficult.

Have you have been in someone else’s house where the fireplace looked like a disaster area? Maybe that one is yours. The look is boring or cold. Sometimes it is more like a wart than a part of a well planned design. You may need to change it to match and complement the rest of the room. You may be stuck with the basic design but that doesn’t keep you from accomplishing a makeover that revamps the exterior and surrounding areas. Let’s start with the mantel.

Traditionally, the mantel is a major opportunity for you, the designer, to turn it into a personal statement for the room. Traditionally, the mantel helped characterize the design of the interior décor. The style could be one of many including traditional, Renaissance, French, American, classic or Victorian. Those can still be done today if you want to add on or replace a mantel. Traditional fireplace mantel designs are normally crafted from stone or wood. If it’s wood, it may be finished or refinished in countless ways. Stone can be striking but more limiting when wanted a change. The easier the mantel is to change, the easier it will be to change the entire look of the room.
Mirror treatments over the fireplace, above the mantel or instead of one, can unfold traditional or modern tastes. This can largely be done by choosing a particular style of mirror. Items that may be used along with a mirror or without it include clocks, pictures, paintings, wall sculptures and candle holders. Family heirlooms of all sorts might find a good home here. Make the area uniquely yours. You can often match features of mirror trim or picture frames with fireplace tools, wood holders or fireplace glass doors. The lighting of candles sitting on the mantel or in wall sconces can really draw attention.
A major improvement involves fireplace ideas with brick as many traditional fireplaces are faced with brick. This building material is expensive and lasts for ages. If you are thinking of replacing the brick, it is super expensive. Hiring a contractor to replace those bricks will likely cost you several thousand dollars. New sheetrock or a new fireplace surround to cover the brick is a possibility that can also be expensive. You might be disappointed with the end results. The best solution for this problem is usually brick fireplace resurfacing or refacing.
An easier, cheaper and faster option is to redo the brick’s finish with brick fireplace paint by resurfacing the existing brick. The materials required to do this job come in an easy-to-use kit that is shipped to your door. The package comes complete with all the tools for a do-it-yourself project that can be done in a couple of days. Clear instructions are included. The finished product has a textured sandstone look and is available in a variety of colors.
Even if the fireplace bricks have been painted before, you can still use this method and you don’t have to strip off all the old paint. The use of the fireplace resurfacing kit will likely produce much better results than the previous one. Flakes of the old paint, if any, can be brushed off before the resurfacing materials are applied.
All you need to do this metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly comes bundled in a single package. The fireplace resurfacing kit comes with: 2 packages of base coat/sealer, 3 containers of undertone colors and enough glaze to cover approximately 100 square feet of fireplace brick. A paint tray, glove, brushes, rollers, sponge, paint tape, stir stick and complete instructions, written and on DVD video, are all included. For brick that is rough or porous, extra base coat/sealer may be needed and can be ordered in addition to the standard kit. The look is similar to a more expensive marble or tumbled stone using the special fireplace brick paints.
Take some of these fireplace ideas and dramatically modify the look of your tired fireplace.
